Coaching with Dr. Russ Rosen is like a breath of fresh air. From the first time I heard him doing an interview on "On Purpose" I knew he offered something different than any other practice management firm, consultant or coach that I had previously encountered. Trust me, I have encountered many in 27 years of practice! Focus in the past has always been on numbers, numbers and more numbers. Dr. Rosen has helped me go beyond the numbers to being happier in practice and happier in my life. Amazingly, the numbers take care of themselves.

Beyond the personal changes I have experienced, the three most important things I have learned about chiropractic practice are: "Patient care vs. patient scare", "TTAT" and "Connecting what the patient cares about (their symptoms) to what I care about (their subluxations)".

I was "raised" in the "patient scare" model of Chiropractic. I was a master at signing patients up for long periods of care so their spines wouldn't degenerate any further. What I missed is that subluxation degeneration is such a small piece of the puzzle and that fear, in the long run, is not a healthy motivating factor. Now, I'm learning to inspire my patients to have long term care because of the health and wellness benefits that it offers them. I'm leading them toward something that they want, rather than away from what they don't want.

One thing that has made a great impact on how I communicate with my patients is TTAT ? it truly is a lost art in Chiropractic. This is an amazing concept. I touch my patients with a fresh, focused, attention each time I check them. By connecting what I feel with my hands to tenderness or tightness they feel to what's going on with their health or their life, they better understand the connection between subluxation and how they function. It takes them beyond having a back problem, to understanding that they have a health problem ? and that Chiropractic can help. It also helps them to realize that if we remove the interference, their bodies have a better chance of healing themselves.

Finally, one of the most powerful things that I have learned from coaching with Dr. Rosen is how to connect the subluxation to the patient's symptoms in a way that is palpable for them. . He teaches that when starting the exam to touch the part that hurts first and then connect it to the spine. Earlier this week I had a patient who had paresthesia in both feet. His previous chiropractor explained that the problem was coming from his spine but never made the real connection for him. I touched his feet first so we were both clear where his symptoms were (he told me that no one had actually touched his feet before when being evaluated for this problem). I explained that if he had a subluxation causing the paresthesia he might also have weakness in his lower extremity muscles I found a weak TFL and explained that if he had a subluxation causing his symptoms that releasing tension on the spinal cord would allow the muscle to work properly. I had him turn his head away from the side of the weak muscle and the muscle tested strong. It helped him connect the dots between the sensory nerves (how he was feeling), to the motor nerves (how he was functioning and why I was going to perform a surface EMG exam) as well as the concept of releasing the tension on his spinal cord. His eyes lit up and he actually said, "Wow, I had no idea". What an amazing way to help patients connect what they care about (their symptoms) with what we care about (the subluxation).

Thank you, Russ for helping me to help my patients all have the "Wow, I had no idea" experience. It's an experience I continue to have with you week after week.
