The classic story I hear from chiropractors is, "I used to ask for referrals, but I stopped because I felt like a salesperson, I felt like a huckster, and hardly anyone ever came in anyway."
My experience is that most chiropractors say something to an existing patient along the lines of, "Do you know anyone who you would like to refer to me?" And then they give them an offer, such as, "Well, let them know that I'll give them a special deal if they would like to come in." If the doc really has it together, they already have a special coupon prepared that they hand it to the patient to give to their friend. The problem with this scenario? Most doctors' success rate with this scenario is generally one out of ten to one out of a hundred that ever even show up in their office. Obviously, this can be quite frustrating.
The other scenario involves the use of one of these heavy-handed, manipulative and coercive techniques that so many of the practice management gurus boast about in their seminars. It goes something along the lines of, "Now that you are starting to get better, I want you to refer at least three of your friends or family members to take your spot. Because you have experienced the power of chiropractic, it is your duty to tell others." Or... my personal favorite, "I noticed you haven't referred your husband or children. Don't you care about them?"
These techniques work great when it comes to shaming a patient into submission. It's fun to boast about such stories when it comes to bathroom talk at seminars, where we stand around and lie and compare whose is bigger... practices that is. But as far as building long-term relationships, well, I think it's pretty obvious that these techniques don't even come close. As I have said on many occasions, "In every interaction, we're either making or breaking relationships." These heavy-handed techniques only fracture the foundation of our relationships, and from my perspective, ruin the good name of chiropractic.
We teach that there should be absolutely no confrontation, no heavy-handed techniques, and no stress.
